The Drury Lane accounts show that as of 1801 Howles was earning £2 weekly as a member of the band, a fee he was still getting in 1807. He played at the Haymarket Theatre at least some summers; the accounts mention him from 1804 through 1810. John was also active in the Royal Society of Musicians, serving on the Court of Assistants in 1807, 1808, 1811, and perhaps other years as well. John Howles wrote his will on 8 February 1806, leaving everything to his wife Deborah. He died in 1812, and his widow proved the will on 11 April of that year.

In 1775 she was engaged for the York Theatre by Wilkinson, who described her as "a lady of fame in the west, from Exeter. . '' At Hull that season she and Mrs Montague caused "frequent commotions" in Wilkinson's company because of their rivalry for public favor. The ill will persisted through several years, and on 3 January 1777, for Mrs Hudson's benefit night at Hull, Mrs Montague balked at playing the Queen to Mrs Hudson's Rosamond in Henry II, though she did agree to read the role, a circumstance which caused the audience to drive her from the stage.
